Beach Lifeguard Information

The (NVBLQ) is the UK & Ireland's most accepted

qualification for employment as a

Beach Lifeguard.

The NVBLQ qualification comprises the following

elements :

Lifeguard Theory ; Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation ; First Aid ;

A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrillator) included in Course as Optional Extra ;

Rescue of a suspected Spinal Injury Casualty with/and without a Spinal Injury Board ;

Open Water Rescues :

These Rescues are carried out using the following :

1. a Rescue Tube and

2. an R.N.L.I. Approved Rescue Board.

Beach Lifeguarding demands a range of different skills to allow for the varying conditions that a lifeguard may encounter.

The main duties of a Beach Lifeguard are :

  • to Supervise activities on the beach ;
  • to Observe Bathers ;
  • to identify Hazards ;
  • to endeavour to Prevent Accidents ;
  • to provide Water-Safety advice ;
  • to provide a Point of Contact for Bathers ;
  • to provide basic First Aid ;
  • to perform open water rescues of casualties' when necessary.

Prior to the commencement of a

National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification

(NVBLQ), each candidate must

be 16 years of age, and must also be able to

meet the following basic fitness criteria:

  • Jump/dive into deep water ;

  • Swim 400m in a time of eight minutes or less ;

  • Swim 200m continuously on front and back ;

  • Run at least 400m ;

  • Surface dive to a depth of 2m ;

  • Be able to Surf 400 meters on a Surf Board.
