Beach Lifeguard Information
The (NVBLQ) is the UK & Ireland's most accepted
qualification for employment as a
Beach Lifeguard.
The NVBLQ qualification comprises the following
elements :
Lifeguard Theory ; Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation ; First Aid ;
A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrillator) included in Course as Optional Extra ;
Rescue of a suspected Spinal Injury Casualty with/and without a Spinal Injury Board ;
Open Water Rescues :
These Rescues are carried out using the following :
1. a Rescue Tube and
2. an R.N.L.I. Approved Rescue Board.
Beach Lifeguarding demands a range of different skills to allow for the varying conditions that a lifeguard may encounter.
The main duties of a Beach Lifeguard are :
- to Supervise activities on the beach ;
- to Observe Bathers ;
- to identify Hazards ;
- to endeavour to Prevent Accidents ;
- to provide Water-Safety advice ;
- to provide a Point of Contact for Bathers ;
- to provide basic First Aid ;
- to perform open water rescues of casualties' when necessary.
Prior to the commencement of a
National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification
(NVBLQ), each candidate must
be 16 years of age, and must also be able to
meet the following basic fitness criteria:
- Jump/dive into deep water ;
- Swim 400m in a time of eight minutes or less ;
- Swim 200m continuously on front and back ;
- Run at least 400m ;
- Surface dive to a depth of 2m ;
- Be able to Surf 400 meters on a Surf Board.
